Eating Disorders – The Causes of Binge Eating

Have you ever seen or observed someone who eats too much? He eats more food than his body actually requires. The person would eat continuously, consuming serving after serving, until you would think that he is going to burst.

Binge eating , or overeating, one of the most common eating disorders—and one of the most serious. If overeating is uncontrolled, it could lead to a variety of cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, artery blockage, heart attacks, hypertension, obesity, and similar diseases. In addition, it drains sufferer’s pocket; buying oversized meals all the time is quite expensive. Finally, binge eating affects relationships. His habit of eating all that is on the table causes his friends to avoid him. He becomes the laughing stock of people due to his overeating. Family members become overly concerned of his health, making him feel as if he’s constricted in what he eats.

But what caused the eating disorders in the first place? Here are several most common reasons.

1. Strong emotions
There are people who have the tendency to consume a huge lot when they are in the grips of a strong emotion such as anxiousness, stress, distress, unhappiness, or anger. By overeating, they have the perception of feeling better.

2. Introduction of supersized meals
The introduction of supersized meals has contributed a lot to the increase of people suffering from eating disorders. Most of these meals, which are quite delicious, are actually unhealthy and contains a lot of trans-fat. Unfortunately, through aggressive marketing and low cost, they are very popular. Overconsumption of supersized meals often causes obesity and malnutrition.

3. Busy and stressful lifestyle
With today’s economy, many people are working doubly hard, or work on two or more jobs, to make ends meet. That also means insufficient time to cook nutritious home-made meals. Therefore, they eat out in fast-food joints and delis due to the lack of time in meal preparation. And as we all know, fast-food, although tasty, are extremely unhealthy.

4. Social eating
Executives, government officials, and high-profile people are often invited to social and corporate events that usually forces them to eat more than necessary.
